REDESIGN THINKING

#ISOLATED2020

We are isolating because, as a species, we are in danger of killing ourselves off. Neither animal nor vegetable, the threat is not in the air nor is it in the water, it is we humans and our own fear, amplified by mainstream media which has made us cage ourselves so that we feel protected.

Induced, provoked or appeared spontaneously, this threat has forced us to modify our habits, to decrease physical interaction and return us to the beginning, to the elemental, the original: survival of the fittest, species.

In an effort to ‘reinvent ourselves’, we have ‘invented’ new routines, washing our hands more often than we use them, bleaching floors we didn’t walk on, and bathing in antibacterial products, yes, anti-bacterials pretending to kill a virus!

And while we dodged the virus, we stopped taking charge of our own defence system, our natural, god-given one, the best.

Nobody warned us that by losing contact with our main ecosystem, we would expose ourselves to it forgetting us, and tomorrow, when we open up again, it may no longer recognise us.

We are so scared that, cleaning ourselves, we forget all about the biggest dirtiest substance on the planet, us humans. Could it be that we are going to have to recognise ourselves at last, and understand that the damage is collective but the responsibility is individual?

With this loss of freedom it seems that our common sense, instinct and logic were taken away as well, just what set us apart from all the other species.

Right under the nose of Nature, which observes us caged by our own fear, life has become topsy-turvy, is turned upside down, while everything else outside rejoices in our absence.

Economic figures plummet and ingenuity skyrockets as our emotions ride a rollercoaster that doesn’t seem to want to touch land, that same land that we urgently need to set foot on again, to re-plant and protect.

And while our elders die, condemned to restrictions and boredom, our little children demonstrate their unexpected and ingenious adaption to this.

But, we still have life, and while there is life there will always be hope.

In the end, whether with or without a mask, instead of longing for the old normality or looking for a new, we should simply take the opportunity to create a much better one.
